New York Daily News – Art Direction and Design
I was with the News for 11 years, starting as a News Designer and moving up to Sunday Art Director, followed by Features Art Director.
I worked across departments with editors at every level, and worked directly with writers, editors and photographers to present the news of the day, investigative stories and special features in a unique and highly-readable way.
Attended news and features planning meetings, made story and presentation suggestions and planned space allotment, story lengths, photo requests for special sections and events.
As Features Art Director, I managed 7 artists directly, with oversight of 5-6 from the news side. I trained freelancers and interns, and determined new hires, designed and maintained all templates and style sheets. Responsible for 48 page sunday magazine plus daily features sections for up to 160 pages per week. As technology evolved, I trained entire features staff to search, upload, caption and edit photos to create web slideshows.
Prior to joining the Daily News, I was the lead Sunday News Designer for the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., where my primary responsibility was Page One and investigative series design.
